How to Jump Start Your Car Safely (Step by Step Guide)

Introduction

  • If your car battery is dead, a jump start can get you moving again.
  • This guide will walk you through the safest way to do it.

What You Need

  • A pair of jump leads
  • Another vehicle with a working battery
  • Safety gloves (optional but recommended)

Step by Step Guide

  1. Position the cars – Park both cars close but not touching.
  2. Turn off both engines – Ensure everything is switched off.
  3. Attach the jump leads – Connect the red cable to the dead battery’s positive terminal, then to the good battery. Connect the black cable to the good battery’s negative terminal, then to an unpainted metal surface on the dead car.
  4. Start the working car – Let it run for a few minutes.
  5. Start the dead car – If it doesn’t start, wait a little longer.
  6. Remove the cables in reverse order – Black cable first, then red.
  7. Let the recovered car run – Drive for at least 15 minutes to recharge the battery.

When Jump Starting Won’t Work

  • If the battery is completely dead or faulty, a jump start won’t help.
  • Call Humber Recovery for battery assistance if you’re stuck.
